Day 2 pictures 070 (Our first exposure to a Croatian lunch. Nothing processed. Cheese, meat, bread, and sliced vegetables. It was delicious! Note the fresh flowers!)
Day 2 pictures 071 (Zelco speaking about the operation of the EMS institute. Zelco reminded me of Grew from Despicable me. He not only sounded like him, but bears some resemblance. Zelco is an amazing leader, and oversees the nuts and bolts of the operation. Everything from Hiring, firing, paying staff, non-medical policy and much more. Our jobs have many similarities. Zelco is also a war veteran of the war that ended in 1992. We have incredible respect for this man!)
Day 2 pictures 072

Day 2 pictures 078
Day 2 pictures 079
Day 2 pictures 081 (Time to load up and head out.)
Day 2 pictures 082 (No, not a boarder crossing. Although we did a lot of walking from place to place, no wonder the Croatians are lean and trim.)
Day 2 pictures 083 (check out the ECG! Very cool!!)
Day 2 pictures 084 (Back at the Hotel. Dr. Koser (Turbo - Skeeter) is telling us a story. He is quite skilled at this.)
Day 2 pictures 085 (This is a very nice hotel about 200 yards from the ocean.)
Day 2 pictures 086
Day 2 pictures 087 (Each morning we would mill about waiting for our transportation. We would often gather just outside the hotel and chat.)
Day 2 pictures 088 (Picture of Paul taking a picture.)
Day 2 pictures 089 (At times it was akin to an amusement park ride as a passenger in the vehicles. The driving was crazy. Lot's of traffic. Here Dr. Aaron is hanging on.)
Day 2 pictures 090 (Zelco, was one of the more sane drivers! We mostly safe when he was driving!)
Day 2 pictures 091 (Zelco with a toothy smile. I'm telling you he could be Grew!)
Day 2 pictures 092 (Another building that have remains of the war with bullet holes. Lots of graffiti on buildings. When asked if it was gang related, we are told no, just kids being kids.)
Day 2 pictures 093 (Hard to tell but this is one of the Zadar Ambulance's running Code III to a call. They only run blue lights, no red or white strobes.)
Day 2 pictures 094
Day 2 pictures 095
Day 2 pictures 096

Day 2 pictures 113
Day 2 pictures 114

Day 2 pictures 126
Day 2 pictures 127
Day 2 pictures 128 (Like many European Countries a large number of people smoke. This was odd for us as the US has banned smoking in just about every public venue. We were giving the head nurse a hard time about smoking and asked if there was a warning label on the cigarette package. She said, "yes, it says you will die if you keep smoking." We laughed! Nearly every place we went they gave you an ash tray. Maria was a great sport and a lot of fun!)

Day 2 pictures 136 (This is how much of the meat is cooked. Open wood grill. The heat coming off this was impressive. It's about 82 degrees in the evening, and likely 100+ near the grill. The taste of the food from this type of cooking is distinctive and wonderful!)
Day 2 pictures 137
Day 2 pictures 138
Day 2 pictures 139 (Pinning the US/Croatian Flag pin on the Institute Medical Director Vladco. I may have misspelled his name. Please feel free to correct me.)
Day 2 pictures 140
Day 2 pictures 142
Day 2 pictures 143 (Great smile Vladco!)
Day 2 pictures 144
IMG_5044 (This picture begins day 2. We had to wear a dress shirt, tie and coat. Mission for the day is to go to the hospital to meet with hospital staff, and then off to meet with the Deputy Governor. It's 9am and already over 80 degrees with 80% humidity. This is the only time in these series of pictures we are not sweating.)
IMG_5046 (Dr. Turbo-Skeeter, he never sweats!)
IMG_5047 (Landscape just past the hotel with the Adriatic in the distance. Lush and a paradise like climate (when you're not wearing a suite).)
IMG_5048 (Zadar County Hospital. Healthcare is run by the state. this is an old beautiful building.)
IMG_5049
IMG_5051 (Sharp looking group! Did I mention it's hot and humid?)
IMG_5052
IMG_5053 (Ambulance from another country.)
IMG_5054 (You can tell where a vehicle is from by looking at the first two letters of the plate. It indicates what country it is from. I don't recall what OP was, perhaps one of the team does, feel free to comment!)
IMG_5055
IMG_5056 (Another odd looking ambulance from a different country.)
IMG_5057
IMG_5058 (Meeting with the hospital staff. They had great air-conditioning!!!)
IMG_5059
IMG_5060 (Brian LaCroix about to begin our presentation about EMS in the USA. He's greeted by one of the head physicians. If anyone recalls his name please comment.)
IMG_5061
IMG_5062 (A great shot of Brian beginning his talk. Brian is a skilled speaker and did a great job at providing an overview of Minnesota EMS.)
IMG_5063 (Dr. RJ Frascone discusses the Physician component of our presentation.)
IMG_5065 (Dr. Aaron Burnett discusses the EMS residency program in Minnesota.)
IMG_5066
IMG_5067 (Pat McCauley discussed the Level I trauma center portion of our presentation. it was a great team presentation!)
IMG_5068 (Pat, sharply dress and does a really nice job presenting. Note the Croatian crest above pat on the wall.)
IMG_5069
IMG_5070 (Treats following the presentation. This is a typical Croatian snack, doughnut type holes rolled in sugar and juice or water. They were very tasty!)
IMG_5071
IMG_5072
IMG_5073 (A true firefighter! This was a fire extinguisher next to the large propane tank. I was thinking... Really, if the propane tank goes up, these fire extinguishers won't be helpful. But you have to admire the safety of the cage, keeping flammable items away, and the security. Great tie Tim!)

IMG_5083
IMG_5084
IMG_5085
IMG_5086 (Translated this is the Internal Department Reception. Or Entrance to the Internal Medicine Department. There is currently no emergency room in Zadar. So you need to go to the department to treat your injury or medical issue. You must be referred here or the ambulance can take you here directly. But you cant just show up.)
IMG_5087 (The woman in Blue is the head nurse over the Internal medicine Department. She's about to give us a tour.)
IMG_5088 (Directly inside there are six rooms with two beds each. There are patients in each of these rooms and they are full. Here the nurse explains the operations.)
IMG_5091 (This is just around the corner from where we were all standing. The other rooms have modern Stryker type beds. This is an overflow area. There is a patient behind the curtain to the right. This is also the nurses station.)
IMG_5092
IMG_5093
IMG_5094 (At all the areas we visited they use the suction cup 12-lead electrodes. Much more echo friendly!)
IMG_5095 (This was also common to see a metal cabinet with the emergency medications in it. They are neatly arranged.)
IMG_5096
IMG_5097
IMG_5098
IMG_5099 (A second nurses station just outside the hall our group is meeting.)
IMG_5100
IMG_5101
IMG_5102 (Just down from the internal medicine area was the surgery area. This surgery suite is not as modern as those on the floor above. This has minimal essential equipment to take care of emergency surgical needs right near where patients are assessed.)
IMG_5103 (Anesthesia Respirator equipment.)
IMG_5104
IMG_5105
IMG_5106 (Here the Surgery Resident with our Physician leaders.)
IMG_5107 (From the hospital we began what I termed "the Danang Death March." We began walking from here to the government building over a mile away. It's about 88 degrees, 82% humidity. We're on our way to meet with Deputy Governor. This is a building just down the street from the hospital. Many of the buildings had graffiti on them.)
IMG_5109 (Some of the Graffiti was quite talented. I was not able to translate Zdanie.)
IMG_5110 (This would be equivalent to our special transportation. This would be anyone who needed medical transportation that would not qualify for an emergency response. Here the driver is hanging out waiting for the next assignment. No different than from USA.)
IMG_5112 (Continuing our walk from the hospital to the Government building. Here we are about to enter the old city of Zadar. This was build in the 15 century, and is the city gate. Originally was a drawbridge with a mote. Once entrance on the left was for chariots and the right was for people. The center was for large carts, wagons and larger items.)
IMG_5114
IMG_5115 (We are about to walk through the gate and turn right through the opening you see. This brings you to the city watering hole.)
IMG_5116 (This was a huge area perhaps smaller than a football field. As rain would fall on this area, the water was diverted to a huge cistern located below. The cistern would hold hundred of thousands of gallons of fresh water. People living in the city would come to draw water. It was enough for the entire city within the walls.)

IMG_5125 (We arrive at the Government building, overheated, very very sweaty and tired. We welcomed water and air-conditioning. We were soppy wet.)
IMG_5126
IMG_5127 (Governmental officials that greeted us.)
IMG_5128 (Božidar Longin is the deputy Governor of Zadar County. He greeted us and was very interested in our findings. He hosted us for our farewell dinner and we really enjoyed getting to know him. He is tremendously proud of Zadar and the Croatian people, To his right is the Zadar County EMS Institute director and to left the official interpreter for the meeting.)
IMG_5129
IMG_5130
