IMG_5814 (We were brought into an area where tourist don't get to go. Apparently during the Cold War, the Russians dug these elaborate and enormous tunnel system. It's is guessed that this was done in the 40's sometime. This was uses in case of nuclear attack by the US. The pictures that follow are those of just a portion of the tunnels that are hundreds of feet below rock. It' is so impressive, and the work that must have happened to make this happen is unimaginable! The Croatian's didn't even know this existed until they declared their independence in the early 1990's. These were seal off, and they opened them to discover the elaborate maze of tunnels. They will be making a portion of this into a visitor center for the National park. You could easily house thousands of people in these tunnels.)

IMG_5818
IMG_5820 (They cut a trench to house the duct work and covered with very heavy stone.)
IMG_5821 (Many of the tunnels were covered in this yellow plastic like insulation. There must have been a massive number of people to build this system of tunnels and then cover them.)
IMG_5822
IMG_5823
IMG_5824 (Many of the tunnels led to these huge caverns. They could store anything from food, water, house people and munitions. It was amazing!)

IMG_5881 (See)
IMG_5882 (Tim getting his certificate and a kiss.)
IMG_5883
IMG_5884 (At each meal starting at lunch there was generally a number of beverage options. It was very common to have wine with lunch and certainly with dinner. There was generally always a red and white wine. Sometimes the red was a simple table wine, and often during dinner there was a special red or white offered. It was outstanding! There was also a finger food generally available too. Such as what we would call doughnut holes and this was a fruit cake type treat. It is dried in the sun, very dense and sweet. But the real food is in the room just left of this table.)
IMG_5885 (I love their flag. It dates back thousands of years! Like ours they are tremendously proud of their heritage and have a very rich culture.)

IMG_5893 (Can you believe it?)

IMG_5937 (Me and Paul. I bought the hat at the Paklenica National Park. It is very cool, although I'm told it screams tourist! The red wine was fabulous!)
